Set against the rolling hills and mist-covered landscape of Ooty, Samara Café is a hospitality space shaped by nature, memory, and adaptive reuse. The café evolved as an extension of Samara Home Stay – a 25-year-old apartment building reimagined into a boutique retreat overlooking the lake. Located within a government-protected zone where new concrete construction is restricted, the project was approached with sensitivity toward both the existing structure and its surrounding ecology.
Originally envisioned as a modest breakfast space for homestay guests, the project gradually transformed into a larger culinary destination. Led by the client — the first runner-up of MasterChef India — the café expanded beyond hospitality into an immersive dining experience that seamlessly blends food, landscape, and design.
The architecture embraces openness at every scale. Designed to frame uninterrupted views of the lake and gardens, the café unfolds through a sequence of light-filled spaces that remain deeply connected to the outdoors. A dramatic entrance layered with greenery and anchored by a raw natural stone wall creates a memorable first impression, introducing the tactile material palette that continues throughout the project.
Inside, muted grey-toned interiors allow the surrounding landscape to take visual precedence. The café houses a contemporary coffee, pastry, and gelato counter alongside bespoke stainless-steel shelving that displays the client’s collection of antique cameras — a curated assemblage adding nostalgia and personality to the restrained interior language.
A series of intimate reading and working corners soften the spatial experience, while the Neapolitan sourdough pizza section is defined by a textured stone-clad feature wall that introduces warmth and material depth. On the opposite side, an expansive glass façade dissolves the boundary between inside and outside, opening entirely toward panoramic lake views and dense greenery beyond.
One of the project’s defining moments is the grand staircase connecting the indoor café to its outdoor dining terraces. Informal concrete bench seating creates relaxed social pockets for coffee, conversation, and casual dining, while the semi-outdoor section is sheltered beneath a glass roof that allows natural light and ventilation to flow effortlessly through the space. The furniture palette — composed of wood and marble — balances the rawness of the architecture with warmth and refinement.
Designed as more than just a café, the project also accommodates gathering and event spaces that can seamlessly transition into buffet settings, celebrations, or intimate evening performances. The architecture remains intentionally understated, allowing the atmosphere, cuisine, and landscape to shape the overall experience.
At Samara Café, the design does not compete with nature — it quietly frames it.
